James Van Buskirk

James Van Buskirk will discuss his seminal book Gay by the Bay: A History of Queer Culture in the San Francisco Bay Area, a definitive chronicling of our community’s noteworthy legacies. James co-authored the book with Susan Stryker, a preeminent authority on Transgender history, to commemorate the opening of the San Francisco Library’s James C. Hormel LGBTQIA Center in 1996. As founding manager of the Center, James spent 4 years collecting and curating thousands of pieces of correspondence, newspaper and magazine articles, photographs and personal belongings of leading LGBTQIA figures. An entertaining and engaging speaker, this event promises to be fascinating, enlightening, humorous and a celebration of our community.
