My Dad Stephanie
(2019, 36m)
An award-winning and Oscar-qualifying documentary short by Lisa Singer and Harry Haese about fellow Rossmoor resident Stephanie Singer.
The film follows 71-year old Phil, just a “regular” dad who finally revealed in 2013 to family and friends that she is transgender, a secret she had kept hidden all her life. Most people did not understand then what being transgender meant. Taken by surprise, her daughter and son-in-law immediately began filming, capturing Stephanie’s life as a man, her transition, and their reactions over the next five years, following the joy, heartache, and humor of Stephanie’s transition from her life as a man to living full-time as a woman.
Penelope Spheeris (award-winning director of “Wayne’s World” and “Decline of Western Civilization”) writes, “This movie is strikingly unique, powerfully honest, and effortlessly evokes a myriad of emotions. Most importantly, it sheds a joyful light on the incredible experience of becoming the person you have always wanted to be, of finding your true identity.”
